The Inspiration of God

Contributor: Marian

1 Corinthians 2

Job 32:8 (KJV)

1 Timothy 3:16

John 1:1-14

When it comes to biblical teaching, the most significant question to ask ourselves is whether or not we believe wholeheartedly that the bible is the inspired word of God. The word ‘inspiration’ appears only twice in the entire bible. The first is found in Job 32:8 (KJV), “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” The second in 2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

We also need to read John 1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...”(v.1) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”(v.14). Therefore, if we fail to believe that the Bible is truly the inspired word of God, we reject Christ and the salvation that He offers to all who will come to Him. But if we do believe 2 Timothy 3:16 is truth, then we shall embrace Christ who is able to reveal to us the full nature of God, and we shall know the guidelines He lays out for our lives that will lead us through the narrow gate and help us to remain on the narrow path that leads to Heaven.

So what is the true biblical definition of the word inspiration? The Greek word is ‘Theopneustos’ which literally means ‘God-breathed’. It cannot be compared to modern day understanding which believes inspiration means ‘a sudden good idea’ or ‘a person or thing that inspires us.’

When the final word was written in the book of Revelation, the canon of Scripture was complete. It stands as the only true ‘inspired word of God’, and one day all prophesy will be fulfilled. However, God does still speak to people today through Holy Spirit whom Jesus sent to be our helper, so I feel it right to conclude with a comforting word He spoke to me during a time of prayer a few months ago:

‘Step out upon the sea of faith and take courage. Keep your gaze fixed on Me. Let your eyes meet Mine as you walk toward Me. The storms may rage around you, and you may be tempted to look at the waves, but don't. Instead keep your gaze upon Me. Blinker your eyes to the distractions around you, those waves that seek to destroy all that you believe. Those waves that seek to convince you that you are worthless. Those waves that seek to drown the very life out of you. Many times I've promised that I will NEVER leave you nor forsake you. I will never let you sink and drown. Look and see. My outstretched hands are toward you and My gaze is fixed upon you. Walk toward Me, never looking to the right or to the left. Instead, keep your eyes fixed upon mine, and as you do you will discover that the turbulent waters beneath your feet will become as solid ground. Precious child, stretch out your hands until they reach Mine and then you will know the security to be found in Me. Then you will walk boldly upon the sea of faith where miracles abound and security becomes reality."

Prayer: Holy Spirit breath into my heart today until I can hear the heartbeat of the Father who sent Jesus to dwell on earth as our teacher, Lord and Saviour. Amen.
