Scriptures: 1 Samuel 17 Luke 2:1-20 Romans 8:37
I read these words this afternoon: “if God puts a Goliath in front of you, it’s because He knows there is a David inside you”, and it has made me stop and think. David is called a man after God’s own heart; David was God’s chosen King to rule over all twelve tribes of Israel; David was the one who saw his own frailty and knew, so often, that he owed all his victories, all his peace to God alone. When he faced Goliath, David knew, and let Goliath know, that he was relying unequivocally upon the Name of the Lord God of Israel to defeat the giant who scorned and derided this same God. This deep seated knowledge that shone out of David was so intense, so potent and so true, that satan and his cohorts would have been under no illusion that Goliath was no match for this shepherd boy. And David was the ancestor from whose line God came to earth, born in Bethlehem, as the Babe in the feeding trough, the Word who became flesh.
This event was announced in splendour such as the world had never seen before, the brightness of the glory of that heavenly host must have been blinding as the whole night sky became a portal for Heaven’s magnificence to flood through. Nothing that man can, or will ever, do can match the wonder of that night, Emmanuel, the King of kings had come to dwell among humankind. The Power who had created the world, the universe and all galaxies lay on a bed of hay, wrapped in cloths, in a helpless, newborn baby’s body. Within this tiny form was the source of all of David’s trust and confidence, all of this strength and utter belief in the righteousness of God who could and had delivered him, over and over again. Here lay the Word, the Light, the Prince of Peace, the Mighty God Himself, born to save us all, to once and for all conquer death and hell, and, most amazing of all, to offer to dwell in us as the Victor for the whole of our life. Is it any wonder that the sky was split asunder by the Host of Heaven singing “Glory to God in the Highest, Peace, Goodwill to all”.
The Power who raised Christ from the dead over 30 years later is the same Holy Spirit who now lives in everyone who has surrendered their lives and accepted the Life paid for by Christ. This is why the Word became flesh, to pay our debt, to win the battle for us, so that with Him we will not die, our life is hidden with Christ in God. The Spirit of God rested upon David, giving him all he needed at the times he needed it, yet we have that same Spirit living in all His Power and victory within us. When we face the inevitable Goliaths who challenge us during our walk on this earth, we need to remember this wondrous and Grace filled truth. Holy Spirit will not disappear from us, He lives in us, we are more than conquerors through Him and by Him and His constant presence within us. Will we have the same assurance as David had? Will we declare that victory is ours because it has already been won by Christ, the One whose birth we are remembering right now? Will we grasp hold of the truth that we face these giants in the Name of the Risen Christ, and let these giants know that they are already vanquished? Will we stand, not clothed in our own armour, but clad in God’s Armour and boldly face the giants, however enormous or daunting they might appear to be?
As we join with the angels in singing Glory to God in the highest, declaring the good news that Christ was born to save all who will turn to Him, let us give our humble thanks to the Word who became flesh all those years ago. For He and He alone is the only salvation for this fallen, broken world of ours.
Prayer: Abba Father, we can never thank You enough for sending Your only begotten Son into this world to save us sinners. But we come with humble hearts, overflowing with gratitude and love for You, for it was You Who first loved us. All we can say is Deo Gratias, thanks be to You, God most high. Amen
