Scriptures: Jeremiah 29:11 John 10:27 Romans 10:17 Isaiah 30:21 Philippians 4:7 I Kings 19:12
In 1999, as I was driving one day, I clearly heard the words “go and work at a hospice”. I am a Christian registered nurse and wasn’t looking for a new job at this time; I hadn’t worked in a hospice before. Over the next few weeks, I kept hearing the same words repeatedly “go and work in a hospice”. After much prayer and seeking God, I listened to the still small voice I kept hearing. In Isaiah 30:21 we read “Whether you turn to the left or the right your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, this is the way walk in”. This was also confirmed through more scripture and other people. I acted on the words I kept hearing, applied for a job at a hospice and worked for the hospice for 6 and half years. An amazing six and a half years of my life for which I give thanks and glory to God.
HOW CAN WE DISCERN THE VOICE OF GOD
One can discern the voice of God in a variety of ways - by waiting on God in silence, praying, reading, and studying Gods word, jotting down scriptures, or through other people. The Voice of God may be a gentle phrase, thought or feeling one keeps hearing and sensing. Does the thought go away? Does it line up with scripture? Do you feel peaceful about what you are hearing, sensing, and does it feel right? Sometimes it can be a gut feeling that won’t go away. It could be a deep sense of peace about an issue or direction for your life. In Philippians 4:7 we read “the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your hearts minds in Christ Jesus”. God can speak to us anywhere, anytime and through anybody. But, often we hear that small still Voice when we are alone with him (1 Kings 19:12).
WHAT CAN WE DO WHEN WE HEAR THE VOICE OF GOD
Hearing the Voice of God and acting on the Voice of God can be challenging. Sometimes we can get it right and sometime wrong, and that is okay. The Voice of God is different for every for every person and every situation. The closer our relationship is with the Lord, the more we can hear and discern the Voice of God. God loves us so much, encouraging us to spend time in prayer, meditating on the word of God, and to spend time with other Christians who may be able to help us discern the Voice of God for our lives. When we hear the Voice of God in our lives, I believe we just need to step out in faith. The Bible declares in Jeremiah 29:11 “I know the plans I have for declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. plans to give you a hope and a future”. John 10:17 says ”My sheep listen to my voice, I know them, and they follow me”, and again in Romans 10:17 “faith comes by hearing the message of God’s Word”, AMEN.
Prayer: Lord, we pray that each one of us will be able to tune into the Voice of God as we continually seek Him for our lives. We pray that through the Power of the Holy Spirit we can clearly hear the Voice of God for our lives. Amen
