Unity can be defined as the state of being one, a unit, or to unite (Oxford Dictionary) and unite means to join together, become one, act together (Oxford Dictionary). As Christians, during these uncertain times with what is happening in the world, we need to unite with each other, standing together in prayer and in faith, praying for our troubled country and the world.
In God’s Word we can read about what unity means for us as Christians. In Philippines 2:1 we read “being in full accord and of one mind”. Ephesian 4:3-6 says” one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one GOD, and Father of all who is above and through all and in us all,” and in Psalm 133:1 we read “how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity”. What amazing scriptures these are about unity.
What then is Christian Unity?
Christian unity allows all Christian believers (children and adults), regardless of background, culture and ethnicity, from all corners of the world, to be united in heart, mind, spirit, one body and one faith. Corrie Ten Boom wrote that to “be united with other Christians, A wall with loose bricks is not good, the bricks must be cemented together.” The spirit of God can only dwell when there is unity within churches, within nations and when all the bricks are cemented together.
There is a song, and the words of this song are “bind us together Lord, bind us together, bind us together with love. There is only one God there is only one king, bind us together lord bind us together with love.” Another well-known song, “A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you, By this shall all men know you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.” In unity we can stand together and serve together in peace and love.
As Christians where there is unity, there is strength in Christ and the Holy Spirit can work through us, within us and flow out of us. As the Spirit of God flows out of us, through Him, we can be united as Christians. We can keep the bonds of peace and love in our hearts. God’s love which binds us together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:14) can enable us to join together, to stand together, to unite in faith and prayer for our country and for the world.
Prayer: In these troubled and challenging times, oh Lord we ask You to enable us as Christians to be united in our faith, in our families, in our churches and in our land. To be bound together with love, to be of one accord and to set aside our differences as we pray for our land and the world. Amen
